William Morris, John Ruskin, Philip Webb and other members of the PreRaphaelite Movement began the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings in 1877. The SPAB was founded out of the concern that many ancient British buildings were being damaged as a result of overzealous “restorations”.
Two years later, John Ruskin was in poor health and unable to continue, SPAB decided take on the work of campaigning to save il Duomo of St Mark’s Venice that Ruskin had previously carried out
