Sir John Gilbert (1817-1897) was a prominent and extremely prolific artist and illustrator during the Victorian Era. Gilbert came from a relatively humble beginning and rose to be a member of the Royal Academy of Art, President of the Watercolour Society and was knighted by Queen Victoria.
Gilbert was unusual, in that he painted large, grand oil paintings, watercolours and engravings and therefore, crossed back and forth across the Fine Art and Craft divide that William Morris and the Arts & Crafts Movement sought to erase.
