Sunday is the Chinese New Year and this year is the Year of the Snake, which in the Chinese tradition is the most refined, enigmatic, thoughtful and intuitive sign.
Royal Mail has issued a series of commemorative stamps this week to illustrate the Chinese Year of the Snake. It made me think about all of the many examples of snakes in Arts and Crafts artefacts both secular and religious.
There is the Snake Head textile design by William Morris from 1876, several William de Morgan ceramic vases and tiles designs, Voysey wallpaper designs and several Burne Jones paintings with this theme.
Then, of course, there are the many representations of snakes in Arts and Crafts stained glass that exist around the country. I have decided to go in search of some of them this year.
