Walter Ramsden Fawkes of Farnley Hall, Otley was a close friend and important patron of JMW Turner. Turner first visited Otley in 1797, and returned many times. It is believed that the many paintings of views over the Chevin in Otley that Turner painted whilst he was staying at Farnley Hall were used in the background of several of his important paintings.
