John Flaxman, the eminent neoclassical sculptor, encouraged John Leech’s parents to arrange for art lessons for Leech as a boy, as he saw artistic promise in John Leech as a young child.
John Leech eventually illustrated works by (among others), William Makepeace Thackeray, Charles Dickens and Robert Smith Surtees (who were favourites of William Morris). Leech also was hugely successful as a cartoonist for Punch Magazine. Leech was a close personal friend of both Thackeray and JE Millais. Leech was very highly regarded by John Ruskin who wrote that : “John Leech was an absolute master of the elements of character” .
