Henry James (1843-1916) visited Britain in 1869 and met many leading cultural figures of the era such as Charles Darwin, John Ruskin, William Morris, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, George Eliot and Charles Dickens. James enjoyed a very full social calendar. As he wrote in The Portrait of a Lady:
“Under certain circumstances there are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.”
