4th July 2016
We would to wish our American customers a happy independence day and thank you for your custom over the past year!
For the non-Americans wondering the origin of the federal holiday, it marks the date of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on 4th July 1776, which declared the United States independence from Great Britain.
The legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred two days before, on the 2nd July 1776. After voting for independence, Congress then concentrated on the Declaration of Independence, which is a statement explaining the separation and announcing how, the thirteen American colonies which were at war with Great Britain, were now regarding themselves no longer a part of the British Empire, and were now thirteen newly independent sovereign states.
A day earlier, John Adams had written to his wife Abigail-
“The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”
Whilst his premonition was two days out, Americans do celebrate independence with pomp and ceremony, with parades through towns, firework displays, huge family gatherings and parties, and huge get togethers within communities.
Happy 4th July- We hope you have a wonderful day!
