Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919) was a talented artist, writer, bibliophile and art collector who worked closely with William Morris, John Ruskin and many of the PreRaphaelites. Murray also had connections to many other highly influential Victorians such as Lord Leighton and George Cruikshank.
Murray began his working life in a drawing office but quickly came to the notice of Edward Burne Jones. Murray worked firstly as an assistant to Edward Burne Jones then William Morris. Later he worked as an assistant to Dante Gabriel Rossetti and he was eventually employed by Ruskin to travel to Italy to execute copies of Italian paintings.
