All Souls Church in Haley Hill, Halifax, is a Grade I listed building which was commissioned by Edward Akroyd, the local highly successful textile manufacturer in 1856. Akroyd appointed the eminent Gothic Revivalist architect Sir Gearge Gilbert Scott (1811-1878) to design the church which was completed in 1859. Scott believed it to be one of his finest churches.
All Souls’ was the highlight of the model village of Akroydon which Scott also designed, with housing for Akroyd’s workforce, as well as Akroyd’s own house Bankfield and its gardens and other buildings such as the vicarage. The church has stained glass by Hardman & Co, William Wailes, and Clayton and Bell (who also worked with GG Scott on the Albert Memorial, London).
GG Scott worked on over 300 churches and cathedrals and trained many young architects including George Edmund Street (1824-1881) who, in turn, trained Philip Webb and William Morris.
