Ellen Terry (1847-1928) was a highly successful actress and influential figure of her era. After her marriage to GF Watts, the painter, broke down, Terry began a long relationship with EW Godwin and they produced two children together. Godwin was a successful Arts & Crafts architect and designer who, like William Morris, was deeply influenced by John Ruskin. Godwin was friends with William Burgess and worked closely with JM Whistler. Godwin worked for Oscar Wilde and was also a successful theatrical and costume designer. Godwin is often remembered today because of his design work with Liberty’s of London.
