There is an exhibition of the exquisite work of Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale (1872-1945) being shown at the Watts Gallery, Compton, Guildford at present.  The works are on display  until the  9th of June 2013.  The exhibition was previously shown at the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight, last summer and is well worth a visit.

Fortescue-Brickdale painted both large-scale oil paintings (many of which ended up in the post prestigious museums and galleries), and smaller-format book illustrations.  The themes of her paintings tended to historical subjects both classical and medieval.  Even her contemporary portraits have a retrospective element.  For instance one of her subjects is seated on a sofa covered in William Morris’s Compton fabric!
