Joseph Paxton was born in poverty and started life as a garden boy. He worked his way up to Foreman of Chiswick Gardens and there, by chance, met the Sixth Duke of Devonshire, William Cavendish.
Cavendish was impressed by Paxton’s abilities and employed Paxton on his Chatsworth Estate in Derbyshire, originally as head gardener. At Chatsworth, Paxton designed gardens, an arboretum, a model village and the revolutionary Great Conservatory.
In Buxton, Cavendish employed Paxton to design the wonderful gardens and walks in the area next to the River Wye. Edward Milner, who worked with, and trained by Paxton later developed Paxton’s scheme.
